Autumn at Oneida

This small painting portrays the astonishing brightness of autumn colours, where lake and sky are almost undistinguishable except for the ribbon of trees and shoreline. Here the mood is of unexpected delight. I had been out on the boat, and rounded the island to find this bright stand of trees in a small bay. The colours of trees, sky and water struck me with joy. The mossy rocks along the shore formed the only dull contrasting note, and I have used granular media to emphasize how their roughness stood out under the flame-like trees.
